The Nose

Dmitri D. Shostakovich

Opera in three acts based on the story of the same name by Nikolai W. Gogol [1930]

Libretto by Dimitri D. Shostakovich, Yevgeny I. Zamyatin, Georgy D. Ionin and Aleksandr G. Price
German text by Ulrich Lenz

Co-production with The Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opera Australia and TeatroReal, Madrid
German
1 h 50 min, no break

In a mix of nightmare and zany, over-the-top satire, director Barrie Kosky stages tap-dancing noses, moving rickshaw tables and cartoonishly hyperbolic protagonists with gaudy costumes, somewhere between folklore and historicism, in a cool space that feels claustrophobic, despite its size. The surrealistic story of the small-minded upstart Platon Kuzmich Kovalev and his fear of loss and paranoia becomes an absurd, revue-like kaleidoscope of vanities, a disturbing mixture of Wozzeck and Alice in Wonderland, with its very own »senseless« logic.
